Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been in the greater Lewiston/Auburn area?

The John F. Murphy Homes, Inc. had its humble beginnings in early 1977. At that time we were called the John F. Murphy Foundation, named for its original founder. The primary purpose of the foundation was to provide a “home-like” environment for adults with mental retardation and to help this population with everyday living skills. In February 1978 the first boarding home was opened. In 1980 a Respite program was developed to assist those people in the community who needed an occasional break. In 1984 the JFM Foundation opened its second home. In 1986 the name of the agency was changed to John F. Murphy Homes, Inc. Since that time JFM Homes, Inc. has added numerous new homes and programs. We are now providing services and programs for all ages, in their own homes as well as agency-owned homes.

Who is John F. Murphy?

John F. Murphy is the namesake and patriarch of our agency.

John was the founder and administrator of the Garcelon School and the Madison Street School which started in motion the events that would lead up to the establishment of the first group homes in the Lewiston Auburn area.

Mr. Murphy was a member of the Lewiston Board of Finance before retiring from that position and becoming administrator for the Garcelon and Madison St. Schools.

Mr. John F. Murphy passed away on February 23, 1976.

His legacy lives on every day, not only as a namesake for Central Maine's longest operating agency, but with his ideals and beliefs surrounding people living with Mental Retardation. John Murphy, and his wife Margaret (on right) will always have a place in the people of JFM's hearts as mentors and role models.
